Fire rips through apartment building for third time in a year

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a fire around 7:45 Wednesday night, January 8, 2020, in the 400 block of Maryland Street.

Thick black smoke and flames were shooting out of the vacant apartment building as firefighters arrived on the scene.

This is that same building that sustained significant damage during two fire in January of last year.

Crews were forced to fight the fire from outside the structure due to hazard inside left for the previous fires.

The fire was declared under control at 1:25 am.

Six people and a dog were evacuated from two residences as a precaution and placed on a Winnipeg Transit bus.

Due to the dangers associated with the structure, it will be demolished.

Maryland Street will remain closed between Ellixe Avenue and St. Matthews Avenue while demolition crews take the building down.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
