A vacant two-storey duplex on the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue was heavily damaged by fire Wednesday morning, resulting in a partial collapse and necessitating an emergency demolition, according to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS).
Crews responded to reports of the blaze at 10:34 a.m., arriving to find thick smoke billowing from the structure. Due to the intensity of the fire and the potential for structural instability, firefighters initiated a defensive attack, battling the flames from outside the building.
“It was not safe for firefighters to enter the structure,” stated a WFPS release. “Crews remain on scene, utilizing aerial ladder trucks and hose lines to apply water to the fire. The WFPS drone is being used to provide situational awareness.”
The fire caused significant damage, leading to a partial collapse of the building. The WFPS has arranged for an emergency demolition of the remaining structure to ensure public safety.
Road closures have been put in place around the scene and will remain until the demolition and cleanup are complete. Residents in the area are advised to exercise caution, as water used to extinguish the fire will likely freeze, creating slippery conditions on roadways and sidewalks. The City of Winnipeg has confirmed that crews will be monitoring the situation and applying sand and de-icing agents as needed to improve traction.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
This incident marks the second time the property has been damaged by fire. The structure was previously affected by a blaze in October 2024.
