Fire destroys Sherbrook Street apartment building

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a fire in a vacant, three-storey apartment building in the 600 block of Sherbrook Street late Monday night, February 14, 2022.

Heavy smoke was coming from the structure as firefighters arrived on the scene. Fire conditions made it unsafe to enter the building and a defensive attack was launched with aerial ladders and landlines.

Extreme cold weather made fighting the fire challenging and crews had to be rotated in and out to protect them from the cold conditions.

The building is expected to be a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Although no injuries were reported directly related to the fire, two cadets who were blocking traffic in the area of the fire were injured when an alleged drunk driver broadsided their vehicle.

Winnipeg Police say that the cadets parked across the roadway at Sherbrook Street and Sargent Avenue around 1;00 am when a Ford Expedition hit their vehicle. The driver was arrested at the scene and faces charges for Impaired Operation of a Conveyance. The two cadets were taken to hospital, treated and released.
