A blaze at a duplex on College Avenue had fire crews hopping Sunday evening, April 7, 2019.

The call came in just after 6:00 pm that a home in the 500 block was on fire. As crews arrived they could see flames and smoke shooting into the sky from several blocks away.

The duplex was vacant and had been since an earlier fire in 2017. A neighbouring home also caught fire according to fire officials. Residents in that home were able to evacuate before firefighters arrived on scene.

A third home was evacuated as a precaution but residents were able to return later Sunday night.

Crews remained on scene for several hours pouring water onto the building from a ladder truck.

Both homes suffered significant fire, smoke and water damage.

There were no reports of injuries.

The blaze is under investigation.
