Finger amputated while in custody –
Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating an incident that occurred at the Main Street Project on March 25, 2016. According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the victim grabbed hold of a cell door as it was being closed by police officers, resulting in partial amputation of one finger. The man was treated in hospital and released.
Under the Police Services Act, the IIU is required to investigate whenever serious injuries may have resulted from the actions of a police officer. Serious injuries, as defined in regulations, include the loss of any part of the body.
