An inmate has died and several others have been injured after a large fight at Stony Mountain Institution on Monday night.
Inside sources tell News4.ca that members of two rival gangs were in an outside exercise yard at the prison when the fight broke out around 6:30 pm. Several of the combatants were reported to have edged weapons.
RCMP confirmed that a 33-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene and that seven inmates were injured and taken to hospital. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) identified the deceased inmate as Colton Patchinose.
Patchinnose had been serving an indeterminate sentence for First Degree Murder, Attempted Murder – Use of a Firearm, Assault Peace Officer and Aggravated Assault since April 21, 2011.
CSC noted that the deceased inmate’s next of kin have been notified.
CSC stated that none of the staff at the institution were injured during the incident.
RCMP Major Crime Services along with the RCMP Forensics Unit, Correctional Service of Canada and Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are continuing to investigate.
