The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba has launched an investigation into the death of an adult male following a police-involved shooting that occurred on January 14th in Dominion City.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the incident began when officers received a wellness call at approximately 8:31 a.m. for a residence in the area. Upon arrival, the first responding officer encountered a male individual advancing towards them with a metal object in hand. Despite multiple commands to drop the item, the male continued to approach the officer, resulting in the officer discharging their service firearm.
Following the shooting, the officer immediately began CPR on the injured male. Paramedics, who had been staged nearby, took over resuscitation efforts. The male was transported to a hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.
The IIU promptly deployed a team of investigators to the scene. Given the fatal nature of the incident, the IIU will request that the Manitoba Police Commission appoint a civilian monitor to oversee the investigation.
The IIU is seeking assistance from the public and urges anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses video footage that could aid in the investigation to contact them toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
