A small plane has crashed in a field in the R.M. of Springfield just east of Winnipeg.
Emergency crews were called to the downed aircraft around 10 am Friday morning near the floodway. The plane had burst into flames shortly after crashing. Two occupants inside the plane died.
The Royal Canadian Air Force released a statement Saturday identifying the two crash victims as Captain Bradley Ashcroft and Captain Zachary Cloutier-Gill.
“This is a sad day for the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Armed Forces. We have lost two members of our military family who served their country well. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends and loved ones, whom we are working to support in the wake of this tragedy.” Said Major-General Christian Drouin,Commander, 1 Canadian Air Division and the Canadian NORAD Region.
The plane is a Piper PA-28 and had just taken off from nearby Lyncrest Airport.
RCMP and Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board are on scene. The cause of the crash is not know at this time.
