One man is dead after a fire in a two and a half storey home on Manitoba Avenue just west of Andrews Street.
Fire crews were called to the scene just before 11:00 pm on Saturday, June 1, 2019.
Smoke could be seen billowing out of a first floor suite as crews arrived.
Witnesses tell News 4 that two bystanders had entered the suite in an effort to pull a male to safety but were unable to due to the smoke.
When firefighter arrived a search of the suit located the man deceased.
Police have not released the age of the victim but family members say he was in his 60s.
Two other people who lived in the building were able to get out before fire crews arrived. One was taken to hospital after being assessed on scene by paramedics. No other injuries were reported.
A tenant of the building said he was sleeping at the time of the fire and was alerted to the blaze by a fire alarm in the building.
Officers from the Major Crimes Unit, K-9 Unit and Forensics Unit were all on scene to investigate the fire along with investigators from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and Office of the Fire Commissioner.
There are no damage estimates available at this time.
Police say the cause of the fire is suspicious in nature.
