Winnipeg Police are looking into a fake nuclear attack warning that was broadcast in Osborne Village on Sunday, April 22, 2018.

Police say they began getting calls about the warning that stated Canada was under attack. The message stated that it was not a test and that the Prime Minister would be appearing on media outlets soon.

Police say that the audio was taken from an online video that was produced in 2016 and encouraged people to play it back as a prank and is not part of any official alert system. Investigators believe it was played through a home stereo system in the Osborne Street and Roslyn Road area.

Police say that the pranksters could face charges if caught for inciting a disturbance as well as other offences.

Alerts in Canada are not broadcast via public speakers. They are transmitted through the media on Television, Radio and Digitally through websites and Cellular phones.

The WPS is taking the incident very seriously and are looking for information on the individuals responsible. If you have any information call 204-986-6222 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
