Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Winnipeg and most of southern Manitoba.
According to the national forecaster clearing skies will allow temperatures to drop sharply with wind chills reaching -40c overnight into Wednesday morning. Although temperatures will increase slightly on Wednesday afternoon they will drop again Wednesday night.
It is expected that “bitterly cold temperatures” will continue into the new year.
When temperatures plummet cold-related illnesses can occur. It is important that if you are out in the cold to watch for shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin.
Remember to be kind to your pets, if it is too cold for you to stay outside it is too cold for your pet to stay outside.
