Southern Manitoba is under a prolonged extreme cold event, with wind chill values dipping to minus 40 or lower this weekend. Environment Canada has issued another extreme cold warning for the region. It warns that conditions are expected to worsen, with warnings potentially expanding to cover most of southern Manitoba later this weekend.
In Winnipeg on Saturday, February 15, 2025, the wind chill is expected to be -29c this evening and -40c overnight. At these temperatures exposed skin can freeze within minutes.
While some slight moderation in wind chill values is expected during daylight hours, temperatures are forecast to plummet again overnight, bringing the extreme cold back with them. The persistent frigid conditions pose a significant health risk to everyone, particularly vulnerable populations such as young children, older adults, individuals with chronic illnesses, those who work or exercise outdoors, and people experiencing homelessness.
Health officials are urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves from the extreme cold. Layering clothing is crucial, with a wind-resistant outer layer recommended. Covering exposed skin is also vital, as frostbite can develop in mere minutes in these conditions, especially when combined with the biting wind. Residents are reminded that if it’s too cold for them to be outside, it’s also too cold for their pets. Pet owners are strongly advised to keep their animals indoors.
Environment Canada issues extreme cold warnings when dangerously low temperatures or wind chill values create an elevated risk of health issues like frostbite and hypothermia. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary safety measures to protect themselves and their loved ones during this extended cold snap.
