Extreme Cold Snap Grips Southern Manitoba, Bringing -40 Wind Chills

Southern Manitoba is in the grip of a multi-day extreme cold event, with dangerously low temperatures and wind chills expected to persist throughout the week. Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning, cautioning residents to take precautions against frostbite and hypothermia.

Overnight lows are forecast to plummet to near minus 30 degrees Celsius, and combined with winds of 15 to 25 km/h, will create wind chill values near minus 40 Monday night and into Tuesday morning. While some slight moderation is expected during the daytime hours, extreme wind chill values are predicted to return overnight throughout the week.

The prolonged period of frigid temperatures poses a risk to everyone, but certain groups are particularly vulnerable. Young children, older adults, individuals with chronic illnesses, those who work or exercise outdoors, and people without adequate shelter are at increased risk of cold-related health issues.

Health officials are urging residents to dress warmly in layers, ensuring that the outer layer is wind-resistant. Covering exposed skin is crucial, as frostbite can develop in mere minutes in such extreme conditions, especially when combined with wind chill. Pet owners are also reminded that if it’s too cold for them to be outside, it’s too cold for their animals.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill create an elevated risk to health, including frostbite and hypothermia. Residents are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones from the extreme cold.
