Extreme cold grips Southern Manitoba Monday

Extreme cold continues in southern Manitoba, including in the City of Winnipeg as an Arctic ridge of high pressure has allowed a cold air mass to settle in.

Windchills of -40 to -45 are expected to spread across the southern portion of the province Monday evening.

Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings and advises that frostbite can develop within minutes at these temperatures.

If you have to go outside dress for the conditions. Dressing in layers is the best way to deal with these temperatures since you can add or remove clothing to regulate your body temperature.

Young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter are at greatest risk when extreme clod sets in.

The national forecaster also noted that if it is too cold for you to go outside it is too cold for your pet to stay out as well.

Temperatures are expected to return to seasonal later in the week.
