Inmate accused of second-degree murder escapes from Headingley jail

RCMP say that a 21-year-old male awaiting trial for second-degree murder is back behind bars after he escaped from Headingley Correctional Centre on Wednesday, November 20, 2019.

Sources tell News 4 that the inmate gained access to a delivery area and that he may have been a trustee at the jail. He then used a sharp-edged weapon to threaten staff before stealing keys to a delivery truck. The escapee drove the truck, crashing through a single gate on the backside of the facility. He then made his way along a dirt road and onto Gaol Road outside the correctional centre fences.

RCMP received the report of the escape around 11:45 am and immediately responded in force. Multiple units along with the Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services responded.

Police located the vehicle the inmate had stolen very quickly but he refused to stop, leading officers on a long chase along highways and down gravel roads.

The suspect was finally apprehended after he lost control of the stolen delivery vehicle and ended up in the ditch at Road 40 E and Road 49 N, northeast of St. Anne, Manitoba.

The inmate has been returned to custody and will be facing a number of charges for his escape attempt.

An investigation into the escape is underway.
