Emergency room wait times drop but Winnipeg is still worst in Canada

Wait times to see a doctor at Winnipeg emergency rooms have dropped by 27 minutes in the past year but that still hasn’t improved our standing as worst wait times in Canada according to a study released Thursday, November 30, 2017, by the Canadian Institute for Health Information(CIHI).

According to the CIHI, the average wait to be seen in a Winnipeg emergency room in 2017 is just over five hours. In 2015/16 it was closer to five and a half hours to see a doctor.

Compare Winnipeg to the national average and the results show things have to change dramatically in order to beat it. Nationally the average wait time to be treated by a medical professional in an emergency room is just over three hours.

According to data compiled by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority between April and October of 2017 wait times in Winnipeg have dropped to 4.3 hours which is still above the national average.

The WRHA says they are pleased with the improvements and believe that a new computer system is largely responsible for improving the administrative process.
