A gas leak in the 0-100 block of Des Hivernants Boulevard North caused a brief scare for residents on Thursday, June 13. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to the scene at 1:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a gas leak.
Upon arrival, the crews discovered a ruptured gas line leaking natural gas into the air. Occupants of a nearby residential building were advised to temporarily shelter in place while firefighters monitored the natural gas levels in the area.
Two individuals were assessed by paramedics at the scene, but neither required transportation to the hospital.
Manitoba Hydro crews were dispatched to repair the damaged natural gas line. They successfully stopped the gas leak at 2:31 p.m., less than an hour after the initial report.
Natural gas is a colourless, odourless, and highly flammable substance. To facilitate easy detection of leaks, Manitoba Hydro adds a chemical compound called mercaptan to the natural gas, giving it a strong, sulphur-like or rotten egg smell.
Residents are reminded that if they smell natural gas, they should evacuate people and pets out of the area immediately. If inside a building, doors should be left open upon exit. It is crucial to avoid smoking, lighting matches or lighters, operating electrical switches, appliances, phones, vehicles, or creating any other source of ignition or sparks. Once in a safe space, residents should call 9-1-1 immediately.
