Early morning apartment fire sents one to hospital

One person is in hospital and 30 more are displaced after an early morning fire on Ellice Avenue near Sherbrook Street.

Fire officials say they were called to the three-story building around 4:00 am and when they arrived they found two people clinging to a window ledge. Firefighters quickly rescued them using ladders.

As crews worked to put out the fire, a search of the building located one person still inside. They were taken to hospital in critical condition but have been upgraded to unstable.

The fire was put out about 30 minutes after crews arrived.

30 people who live in the building are being helped by the City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Service workers to find a place to stay until they can go back into the building.

The cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation.
