Eligibility and changes to vaccination campaign announced

Eligibility for immunization at Manitoba’s super sites and pop-up clinics has been expanded to those 59 and older and First Nation people 39 and older.

People who have been in the province for more than one month will be able to receive the vaccine at no cost as long as they reach the eligibility requirements.

The province announced a seventh super site will be opened in Steinbach in May. Currently there are five operating super sites in Winnipeg, Brandon, Thompson, Selkirk and Morden. A six site was announced earlier this month in north Winnipeg. That site is also scheduled to open in May.

During a media briefing the province announced plans to reduce the number of small pop-up clinics and replace them with fewer, larger pop-ups.

As of today about 20 per cent of Manitobans have received the vaccine since the immunization campaign began in December 2020.

The province also reminded Manitobans that although the vaccines offer immunity it is not 100 per cent and it can take two weeks for your body to build up enough antibodies after the first dose.

Ten people have died after becoming infected with the virus after being immunized. The province noted that no deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported in Manitobans who became infected after 14 days from receiving their second dose.
