Elderly Man Seriously Injured in Assault, Suspect in Custody

On May 7, 2024, at approximately 8:10 pm, the Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to an assault in progress at a residence on Burns Bay in Portage la Prairie. The suspect was reportedly assaulting an elderly male when officers were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, RCMP officers found the suspect jumping on the roof of a vehicle. He was promptly arrested and taken into custody.

The victim, a 76-year-old male, sustained serious injuries in the assault. He was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Winnipeg, where he remains with serious injuries.

The investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Michael Taylor, was known to the victim and had been hired to perform renovations at the victim’s home prior to the assault. Taylor is also accused of causing property damage at the residence.

Taylor has been charged with Aggravated Assault and two counts of Mischief. He has been remanded into custody pending further proceedings.
