Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to two significant fires at the same property in the 100 block of Albina Way within nine hours of each other.
Around 11:40 pm on Thursday, June 30, 2022, emergency crews were called to a fire in the two-storey unit of a duplex. As crews arrived on the scene they encountered fire and smoke coming from the building. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 12:33 am
Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours checking for hotspots.
Two occupants and a dog were able to safely evacuate prior to firefighters arriving on the scene. No injuries were reported.
Minutes before 9:00 am on July 1, 2022, firefighters were called back to the same unit in the duplex. This time the building was heavily involved in fire. Crews deployed hand lines on the exterior of the building to prevent the spread of fire while other firefighters attacked the fire from inside the building.
At the time of the fire the two-story unit was not occupied. People in the attached single-storey unit were able to self evacuate.
No injuries were reported.
Fire officials say that as a result of both fires the two-story unit is expected to be a complete loss. The adjoining single-storey unit suffered smoke and water damage.
The cause of both fires is under investigation.
