Dryer fire prompts warning from fire officials

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is warning people to be aware of risks of dryer fires after crews spent more than 30 minutes bringing an overnight fire under control.

Just before 3:20 am firefighters were called to a home in the 500 block of Leila Avenue for the report of a fire.

When crews arrived on the scene they encountered smoke and flames coming from the structure. An offensive attack was immediately launched.

A search of the building found no one inside.

Fire officials say that an initial investigation into the cause has determined the fire began in the laundry room.

WFPS say that the risk of these types of fires can be reduced by following a few simple tips:

  • Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional to ensure it is in good working order
  • Do not use the dryer without a lint filter and always clean the filter after each load of laundry
  • Periodically check the venting system to ensure there is no lint buildup and it is not damaged, crushed or restricted
  • Make sure the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer is running
  • Never leave a dryer running when away from your home
