Winnipeg Police have arrested and charged a 23-year-old male after he was seen weaving through traffic and speeding along Pembina Highway with a 2-month-old child in the vehicle.
Officers had been conducting impaired driving check stops earlier in the evening on October 17, 2020. Around 2:20 am the driver blew past the checkstop van and continued up Pembina while officers in the van attempted to catch up to the car. Police said the car reached speeds of 90 km/h and crossed Osborne Street onto Donald at Confusion Corner.
Shortly afterward the driver of the speeding vehicle came to a stop at Donald Street and Gertrude Avenue.
As the driver got out of the car he raised his hands over his head then laid down on the roadway. Police took him into custody.
The male was charged for his alleged involvement with Operation of a Conveyance While Impaired to Any Degree by BAC or Drug or a Combination of Both, Fail or Refuse to Provide Sample and Drive without licence or with invalid licence
Police say that the accused was also wanted on four outstanding warrants for:
- Break Enter & Commit Robbery – Dwelling House
- Robbery
- Break, Enter & Aggravated Assault
- Discharge Firearm with Intent
- Discharge Prohibited Firearm
- Possession Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Weapon
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing that it is Unauthorized
- Possession of a Weapon Knowing that it is Unauthorized
- Possession of Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition
- Assault with a Weapon
- Fail to Attend Court
The accused was detained in custody.
Police say that they are not releasing the name of the accused to protect the identity of the child.
