Driver of stolen truck caught after city-wide chase

Winnipeg Police Service says that a 36-year-old man was arrested and charged after he led police on a city-wide chase on Sunday afternoon, March 12, 2023.

Officers received a report that a Peterbilt box truck was being driven erratically and tracked by GPS. Shortly after the report officers found the truck near Jefferson Avenue and King Edward Street and followed it through Seven Oaks, River East and Transcona. During the chase, multiple attempts were made to stop the truck. Officers were able to successfully deploy a stop stick near Gunn Road and Day Street. The truck continued to evade police and at one point tried to sied-swipe a patrol unit. The truck eventually for stuck in a snowbank in the 900 block of Redonda Street.

Officers removed the driver from the cab of the truck as the driver tried to resist.

Investigators say that the vehicle had been stolen from an Omands Creek area business.

Vincent John Jose Oliveira has been charged for his alleged involvement with Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer, Resist Peace Officer, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance and Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order.

The accused was detained in custody.
