Driver fined after rescue from flood waters

A 21-year-old male from Winnipeg is probably wishing he had not ignored barricades set up on Provincial Road 200 on Thursday morning May 19, 2022.

Police say that they got a call from the diver of a vehicle around 8:15 am say that he was stranded and that water was up to his steering wheel and that he could not get out of the vehicle.

Police and fire crews responded to the scene and were able to rescue the driver who was then fined $237 for disobeying a prohibition or restriction imposed on the use of a highway.

It is also likely the driver will also have additional expenses related to water damage to his vehicle.

RCMP remind drivers that barricades are set up for a reason and ignoring them puts your safety and the safety of first responders at risk when they have to respond to these types of calls.

“We all know that there is overland flooding throughout areas of our province and that this flooding has resulted in a number of road closures,” said Corporal Julie Courchaine of the Manitoba RCMP. “The barricades are in place to keep everyone safe. No one should ever try to bypass them under any circumstance.”
