Driver Charged in Death of Pedestrian

A motor vehicle collision claimed the life of an 87-year-old pedestrian at the intersection of McPhillips Street and Leila Avenue on the morning of December 23, 2024. Emergency personnel were quick to respond to the scene around 7:30 a.m., where they found the elderly male in unstable condition. He was swiftly transported to the hospital, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the driver, who remained on the scene and cooperated with the authorities, was behind the wheel of a pick-up truck traveling eastbound on Leila Avenue. The truck struck the pedestrian as he was crossing McPhillips Street at a marked pedestrian crossing. Members of the Traffic Division carried out a thorough investigation, including obtaining surveillance footage from the area.

After nearly three weeks of investigation, a 44-year-old male from Winnipeg was arrested on January 12, 2025. He faces a charge for his alleged involvement of Drive Carelessly – Cause Death. Following the arrest, the individual was released on an Appearance Notice.
