Driver charged after failing to stop at railway crossing resulting in a derailment

A 69-year-old semi-truck driver has been charged with careless driving after he allegedly failed to stop at a railway crossing when a train was approaching.

The incident happened around 1:55 pm on October 31, 2023, in the RM of Springfield at a railway crossing on Highway 101 (Perimeter Highway).

Police say that the semi failed to stop at the crossing, went into the ditch and over the train tracks damaging them. The oncoming train was unable to stop before hitting the damaged tracks and several cars derailed.

Southbound Highway 101 was closed for several hours while crews worked to clear the derailment.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries. He was charged with Drive Carelessly ($672), and was issued a Serious Offence Notice.
