Driver arrested after four men hit by a vehicle at Freedom Convoy protest

Winnipeg police have arrested a 42-year-old male from Headingly after he allegedly hit four adult males with his vehicle at the Freedom Convoy in front of the Manitoba Legislature.

Police say that a Jeep Patriot drove through a group of protesters at about 9:10 pm on Friday, February 4, 2022. In a video posted to social media a vehicle can be clearly seen moving towards a pedestrian, striking and dragging them before driving off.

Three of the victims received minor injuries and were treated at the scene. One male was taken to hospital, treated and released.

Police say that after incident on Broadway the vehicle continued west on Portage Avenue and was seen by witnesses speeding and ignoring traffic control lights.

WPS with help from the RCMP were able to stop the vehicle in the 4800 block of Portage Avenue around 10:30 pm. The driver was arrested after a brief struggle with officers.

The accused faces a number of charges for his alleged involvement including four counts of Assault with Weapon, two counts of Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance Cause Bodily Harm, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance, Two counts of Fail to Stop After Accident Knowing That Reckless and two counts of Fail to Stop at Scene of Accident.

The suspect was detained in custody. His name has not been released at this time as charges have yet to be formally laid.
