Chief speaks out on drinking and driving and officer arrests

Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smyth spoke out today about drinking and driving and the arrests of two of his members for impaired driving.

On Monday, November 20, 2017, an off-duty officer was arrested by RCMP in Headingley. He will be charged with care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired.

Six days later another off-duty officer was arrested by Winnipeg Police in West Kildonan. This officer refused a breathalyzer. He will also face charges related to drinking and driving.

In October constable Justin Holtz was arrested after he was involved in a fatal hit and run on Main street that resulted in the death of 23-year-old Cody Severight. Holtz is facing a number of criminal charges in relation to the incident

On Wednesday, November 29 Chief Smyth told reporters that both officers have been placed on administrative leave.
