Downed power line severs an underground gas line

Repair crews are still on the scene Friday morning, January 15, 2021, fixing a severed gas line and restoring power to an area in East Kildonan.

Around 3:30 am today emergency crews responded an outside fire in the 1000 block of Roch Street. The fire had been caused by a downed power line that somehow severed an underground natural gas line. The leaking gas was burning off above ground.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic service called in a number of other units to help with the evacuation of neighbouring homes. Those evacuated were able to take shelter in a Winnipeg Transit bus that was brought in.

Hydro employees were able to cap the gas line which put out the fire and begin repairs to both the downed power line and gas pipe.

Hydro crews estimate that power will be fully restored in the area by 1:00 pm today.

No injuries were reported.
