Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has donated one million dollars to the Dakota Community Centre’s Dakota Futures Capital Campaign.
Dakota Community Centre is where NHL star learned the game.
“From my earliest days playing hockey, Dakota Community Centre has always played a pivotal role in my upbringing and my career,”said Toews
Toews was born and raised in Winnipeg and grew up playing hockey at the centre. In 2010 the community centre renamed it’s rink the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex in honour of his role in winning the Stanley Cup that year.
In addition to the donation Toews will take on the role of honourary campaign chair for the Dakota Futures Capital Campaign.
The fundraising campaign is hoping to raise enough money to construct a 600,00 square foot field home that will house a gymnasium, multiple sport courts like basketball and volleyball, sports training and conditioning, a multi-lane track as well as studio space for health ad wellness programs and other recreational events.
The 17.9 million dollar complex is expected to be open by far of 2017.
