DNA used to link handgun to party guest

A DNA test on a handgun was used to identify a 26-year-old male suspect, say Winnipeg Police.

In March of 2016 police had responded to the report of gunshots fired in the 800 block of Manitoba Avenue.

A police service dog led members to a house in the 900 block of Manitoba where 18 people were removed and questioned.

Investigators say that no firearms were found inside the home but officers did locate a .357 Magnum revolver in a recycling bin behind the home. The weapon had several spent rounds in the cylinder.

Testing on the weapon was conducted by police with help from the RCMP’s National Forensic Laboratory Services. DNA results identified the suspect.

On Friday, July 26, 2019 Police found the suspect on Langside Street and took him into custody.

Steven Allen Taylor from Winnipeg is facing charges for his alleged involvement with Possession of a Weapon, Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order, Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000.

He was detained in custody.
