DNA helps nab suspect in 2007 sexual assault

Winnipeg Police have arrested a male suspect in connection to a 2007 sexual assault.

On May 8, 2007, around 1:00 am, a 27-year-old woman was in the area of Flora Avenue and Robinson Street when she was approached by a man on a bicycle. The suspect had a knife and forced the victim into a back lane and sexually assaulted her.

Police say that DNA collected from the scene was submitted to the National DNA Data Bank of Canada. In January of this year a match came back to a male who is currently incarcerated in a federal prison.

Investigators obtained a warrant for sexual assault followed by a DNA warrant in October. The suspect was the transferred to Manitoba to face charges.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2019, officers arrested and charged Douglas Wayne Brown, 55 with Sexual Assault with a Weapon and Uttering Threats. He was then returned to prison.
