The Province of Manitoba is making disaster financial assistance (DFA) available for eligible municipalities, homeowners, farms and small businesses that were impacted by the October 2019, storm.
“When a widespread natural disaster strikes and creates an unreasonable financial burden, DFA may be made available to help individuals and local authorities recover,” said Premier Brian Pallister. “The fall storm resulted in widespread damage, and the DFA program will help cover the costs of response and recovery from the overall weather event.”
Under the Manitoba Emergency Measures Act the province can make DFA available after a natural disaster occurs as long as it meets certain criteria.
Pallister said that the province expects as many as 20 municipalities are eligible for the disaster assistance with Winnipeg making the largest claim.
Although how much assistance will be paid out is not yet known the premier said he thought it would be around $12.5 million.
Manitoba Hydro does not qualify for this type of assistance and is on the hook for more than $100 million in infrastructure damage caused by the storm said Pallister.
