Details released in Tuesday’s dramatic Disraeli Bridge rescue

Winnipeg Police have released details in a story News 4 first told you about on Tuesday February 23. 2021.

Police and fire crews were called the area of the Disraeli Freeway and Higgins Avenue around 3:35 pm after the Emergency Call Centre received multiple calls about a male who had climbed over the ledge of the bridge.

Winnipeg Police Service Central District Supervisor, Patrol Sergeant Saif Khan was the first to arrive on scene and noticed the male was hanging on to the bridge by the railing rungs. He was about 35 feet above Higgins Avenue.

Khan sent two officers to the bridge who reached through the railings and held on to the man’s jacket until help arrived.

Moments later Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service arrived and helped secure the male.

As officers blocked traffic on Higgins Avenue in both directions the patrol sergeant noticed a boom truck owned by SRS Signs nearby and asked the driver for help in the rescue. The boom was quickly deployed and positioned under the male. The boom was then used to slowly push the male up to the point the rescuers on the bridge could pull him over.

The male was taken to hospital for a medical assessment. No injuries were reported.
