IIU investigating death of man in police custody

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the death of a 56-year-old male who was in police custody at the North District station on Hartford Avenue.

On Tuesday April 16, 2019, Winnipeg Police responded to a North Point Douglas home for the report of an assault. When officers arrived on scene they located a man in his 50’s who had been injured. He was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Shortly afterwards officers located the 56-year-old suspect near Main Street and Sutherland Avenue and place him under arrest. He was taken to the North District station for processing and placed in a holding room

At about 10:15 pm officers entered the holding room and found the suspect unresponsive. He was taken to hospital in critical condition but died a short time later.

The IIU has taken over the investigation and since it involves a death they have requested a civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission.
