Information about a fifth inmate who died while in custody this year at the Winnipeg Remand Centre has just come out.
It happened on September 4, 2016. Robert McAdam, 53, was in the Winnipeg Remand Centre for breaching a court order. He was found unresponsive and taken to the Health Sciences Centre where he died of his injuries on September 6, 2016.
Manitoba Corrections says that a review of McAdam’s death is underway and they notified the Chief Medical Examiner’s office as required by legislation when an in custody death occurs.
Manitoba’s Justice Minister, Heather Stefanson’s office issued a statement saying that she has asked the Community Safety Division to conduct a systematic assessment to determine if there are underlying themes relating to the deaths that need to be changed.
The John Howard Society is concerned over possible systemic issues and wants the outcome of the assessment made available to the public. They are also requesting the minister launch a public inquiry into the deaths.
