RCMP officer cleared of wrongdoing after allegation of excessive force

An RCMP officer in Dauphin has been cleared of any wrongdoing after an investigation by the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba.

IIU says that on November 27, 2018, a woman was arrested on the Pine River First Nation for breaching the peace. She was taken to the Dauphin detachment of the RCMP.

The woman was allegedly aggressive and spat at officers while trying to kick them. One officer swept the suspects legs out from under her in order to get her on the ground and complete searching her.

When the woman landed she complained of a sore knee and was taken to hospital. Doctors at the hospital determined she had a broken left fibula.

During the investigation, the woman admitted to the IIU that she had taken drugs and alcohol before police were involved. IIU investigators say they talked to several witnesses including three officers and two civilians. They also reviewed video from inside the cell block that did not support the woman’s version of events.
