On May 7, 2024, at approximately 6:00 pm, the RCMP Central Traffic Services responded to multiple reports of a dangerous driver on the Perimeter Highway near the CentrePort exit, heading north. The vehicle, a grey Chevrolet Traverse SUV, was reported to be swerving, changing speeds, and had nearly struck several vehicles.
As officers were responding, it was reported that the suspect vehicle had struck another vehicle and fled the scene. The suspect vehicle was later located driving in the middle of the Perimeter Highway near Highway 9. Despite attempts to stop the vehicle, the driver did not comply and almost rammed another vehicle.
The suspect driver rammed one of the police vehicles several times. Officers were eventually able to box the vehicle in and bring it to a stop just off the Perimeter on Henderson Highway.
The driver, a 57-year-old male from Winnipeg, refused to comply with police commands and had to be forcibly removed from the vehicle. He was arrested and taken to hospital with minor injuries. The driver is facing a charge for his alleged involvement of Refuse Drug Recognition Evaluation Demand and was released with an upcoming court date. The investigation is ongoing, and further charges are anticipated.
One officer received minor injuries in the incident but did not require medical treatment.
The RCMP is seeking to identify any other vehicles that may have been struck by the suspect vehicle or anyone who witnessed the incident. Anyone with information is urged to call RCMP Central Traffic Services at (204) 984-6913.
