“Danger – Thin Ice” warn Winnipeg’s emergency responders

Winnipeg Police Service River Patrol and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service have a clear message to share as temperatures begin to drop around the city, Danger – Thin Ice!

All Winnipeg waterways including drainage ditches, culverts, streams, ponds, creeks and rivers are extremely dangerous this time of year as ice begins to form. Ice surfaces can be thin and falling into frigid water can be deadly.

“Ice is starting to form on the surface of all bodies of water and the ice thickness is completely unpredictable at this time of year,” said Assistant Chief Mark Reshaur, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS). “All residents should stay away from these surfaces and their banks.”

Parents are encouraged to speak to their children about the dangers of waterways. Dog owners should also keep their pets on a leash around the waterways to prevent them from chasing geese and other animals onto thin ice.

“Staying away from the riverbanks, and off of any thin ice, is the only way to prevent the dire consequences of falling through,” said Patrol Sergeant Jason English, River Patrol Supervisor for the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS). “The WPS considers all frozen bodies of water within the city of Winnipeg to be unsafe for recreational use with the exception of areas that are monitored.

Although ” Danger – Thin Ice” signs are posted in some areas of the city all ice should be considered unsafe even if there is not a warning sign in place.
