Cumberland Avenue high-rise fire contained to one suite

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to an alarm in a high-rise apartment building on Cumberland Avenue on Thursday afternoon, September 9, 2021.

As crews arrived on the scene they encountered smoke in the building and called in a second alarm to increase the number of firefighters and equipment.

An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control within 40 minutes at 2:32 pm. The fire was contained to a singe suite but neighbouring suites suffered smoke and water damage.

Some of the residents in the building were evacuated but others were told to shelter in place. Once the building was ventilated most residents were able to return to their suites. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was called in to help find alternate places to stay for residents displaced by the fire.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
