More than 1 million litres of crude oil spilled in St. Lazare train derailment

The accident occurred on February 16, 2019 near St. Lazare in Western Manitoba.

The TSB says that two of the cars remains upright and the remaining 35 were piled up in various positions over about 400 feet. 16 of the cars were leaking the crude oil which flowed to a low-lying area beside the track.

According to investigators, the train was travelling at about 49 km/h when it experienced a train-initiated emergency brake application. Investigators will be looking at 7 of the tanker cars as well as selected wheel sets and track components.
