Crime Suppression Initiative in William Whyte Following Violent February

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) has concluded a targeted crime suppression initiative in the William Whyte neighbourhood following a surge in violent incidents in February, officials announced today.

The area experienced a significant increase in crime compared to the same period last year, with incidents described as notably violent. February saw three homicides: two on February 15th in the 300 block of Alfred Avenue, and one on February 27th in the 500 block of Magnus Avenue. In addition to the homicides, police responded to multiple firearm-related offences, arsons, and assaults, prompting heightened concern from both residents and the WPS.

In response to the escalating violence, the WPS Guns and Gangs Unit, in collaboration with North District Community Support officers, launched a focused crime suppression initiative between February 26th and March 9th, 2025. The initiative aimed to suppress crime, particularly gang-related activity, through a visible police presence and proactive enforcement.

During the two-week operation, officers conducted:

  • 9 arrests
  • 36 individual engagements
  • 21 traffic engagements
  • A search warrant execution in the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue related to firearms
  • Multiple submissions for warrants in contravention of court orders
  • 25 Criminal Organization High Risk Offender (COHROU), wanted person, and bail enforcement checks.

The WPS emphasized that many of the individuals involved in the incidents were linked to known criminal and gang organizations.

“Proactive efforts included individual and traffic engagements. Outstanding arrest warrants were pursued, and bail enforcement conditions were monitored and enforced,” police said in a statement.

The WPS highlighted the importance of community reporting and crime analysis in tracking crime trends and deploying resources effectively. They encourage residents to continue reporting suspicious activity to assist in their efforts to maintain public safety.
