The Major Crimes Unit of the Winnipeg Police has successfully apprehended two suspects believed to be responsible for a series of commercial robberies that swept the city between January 1, 2025, and January 10, 2025.

Over the ten-day period, the Winnipeg Police responded to multiple incidents involving armed robberies at various hotels, restaurants, and bars. In the majority of these cases, the suspects were masked and wielded a handgun and bear spray, with at least one victim reporting the sighting of a hand grenade. The suspects specifically targeted VLT money and cash from employees. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

Police say that the robberies occurred at:

  • January 1: A lounge in the 1100 block of St. Mary’s Road.
  • January 6: Multiple locations including lounges in the 1300 block of St. James Street, the 600 block of La Fleche Street, the 500 block of St. Mary’s Road, and the 2000 block of Pembina Highway. In addition to these, stolen vehicle license plates were reported near the intersection of Burnell Street and Notre Dame Avenue.
  • January 8: Various establishments were targeted, including lounges in the 3000 block of Ness Avenue, the 100 block of Dumoulin Street, the 100 block of Osborne Street, and the 400 block of Main Street.
  • January 10: A lounge in the 1600 block of Regent Avenue West and a retail store in the 500 block of London Street were victimized.

General Patrol officers turned the investigation over to the Major Crimes Unit, leading to the identification of two suspects: Matthew Gibbs, 41, and Daniel Redcliffe, 33, both of Winnipeg.

On January 14, tactical units executed precision traffic stops leading to their arrests:

  • Around 10:09 a.m., a 41-year-old suspect was apprehended near the intersection of Fort Street and Portage Avenue.
  • Later, at approximately 5:28 p.m., a 33-year-old suspect was taken into custody near Ellice Avenue and Langside Street, where methamphetamine was discovered during the arrest.

That same day, at around 8:40 p.m., the Major Crimes Unit executed a search warrant in the 600 block of Furby Street, seizing several items directly linked to the robberies, including a variety of weapons.

Matthew Gibbs faces charges for his alleged involvement, including nine counts of armed robbery, ten counts of disguise with intent, theft under $5000, robbery, and two counts of possessing stolen property.

Daniel Redcliffe has been charged for his alleged involvement with ten counts of armed robbery, ten counts of disguise with intent, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a weapon, three counts of failing to comply with a release order, theft under $5000, and robbery.

Both suspects remain in custody.
