“Our government is working together with police agencies and community organizations across the province to achieve our shared goals of combating the illicit drug trade and reducing crime,” said Pallister.

Nearly $385,000 in additional funding will go to fund 12 other projects across the province.
“We are pleased to support these programs, which look for tangible ways to deter crime and prevent theft without putting a strain on police resources,” Cullen said. “Our commitment to crime reduction will strengthen support for new and existing projects that involve meaningful community engagement.”
The bicycle theft prevention program has come about because of a national trend that shows bicycle thefts are related to the rise in drug addiction. Bicycles have become a form of street currency for drug users. The fund for the program will be used to create an online bicycle registry and improving bicycle parking in high-traffic areas.
“This funding will allow us to champion new and innovative initiatives that will assist in crime reduction,” said Chief Wayne Balcaen, Brandon Police Service.
The other announced project in Brandon will see funds used to help reduce recidivism by helping inmates released from the Brandon Correctional Centre find a job and develop the skills they need to break successfully cycles of crime in their lives.
