Crews move in to demolish the Kirkwood Block after a major fire on Wednesday

The historic Kirkwood Block building that was the location of a major fire on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, is being torn down.

On Thursday evening, February 3, an excavator from a local demolition company made short work of tearing down the second floor of the structure and the massive billboard that originally sat above the roof of the building.

Firefighters, construction and demolitions crews watched as a lone excavator tore into the 110-year-old building.

Many people in Winnipeg remember the structure as the home to Club Morocco, famous for jazz in the 1960s and 70s.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service say that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Demolition to the rest of the building will continue over the next several days.
