Crews battle vacant house fire in extreme cold.

Firefighters responded to the 100 block of Selkirk Avenue around 2:00 am on Sunday January 2, 2022, for a fire in a vacant bungalow.

Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the building as emergency crews arrived on the scene. An offensive attack was launched but as conditions deteriorated firefighters transitioned to a defensive attack.

Crews continue to have issues due to the extreme cold with frozen hydrants and firefighting equipment freezing up. Extra firefighters responded to the scene overnight as crews were rotated often to protect them from the elements.

Residents of a neighbouring home were evacuated after that building suffered water damage.

It is expected that firefighters will remain on the scene for the rest of the day putting out hotspots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Selkirk Avenue remains closed between Austin Street North and Main Street while crews remain on scene.
