Crews battle major fire on Portage Avenue

Firefighters responded to a major structure just after 9:30 am on Wednesday, February2, 2022, on Portage Avenue at Langside Street.

When crews arrived on the scene heavy smoke and flames were shooting out of the two-storey commercial building. A defensive attack was launched by firefighters due to the dangerous fire conditions inside the building.

Firefighters are pouring water on adjacent buildings in an attempt to stop the fire from extending to them. Extreme cold is playing havoc with equipment as hose lines are freezing up and making the roadway slippery. One firefighter was injured after they slipped and fell.

Fire officials say that they do not believe anyone was in the building at the time of the fire but have not been able to search the building yet.

The building is expected to be a complete loss and officials warn that there are signs that indicate the structure could collapse.

In the 1960s and 70s the building was home to Club Morocco where some of the world’s most famous jazz musicians performed in the city.

Firefighters are expected to be on the scene for most of the day.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Portage Avenue is expected to remain closed between Sherbrook Street and Young Street until emergency crews have completed their work.
