Crews battle blaze and frigid temperatures on Christmas Eve

RM of Headingley Fire Department along with crews from Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a fire in the late afternoon, December 24, 2020.

Just after 4:30 calls came into the emergency call centre for the smell of smoke and then minutes later for a structure fire in Headingley off Portage Avenue.

When crews arrived thick black smoke and flames could be seen shooting out of a building at the back of the property for Best Buy Homes.

Conditions were not the best during the fire as temperatures hovered around -27c with the windchill. Water had to be pumped several hundred feet from a hydrant at the Flying J.

An employee of the company told News 4 that the building was used for refurbishing and that another employee had been in the building about 15 minutes before the fire started and had seen nothing unusual.

Firefighters are expected to be on scene battling the fire well into the evening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
