COVID-19 cases skyrocket over the weekend in Manitoba

Manitoba has reported 1,721 new cases of COVID-19 for Monday, January 3, 2022, but that isn’t the full story. The province no longer makes data available on the weekend but based on data from the provincial dashboard there are 5,394 more active cases today than there were on Friday.

Hospitalizations are also up with 228 people being treated for COVID-19 including 32 receiving treatment in ICU.

The provincial test positivity rate continues to climb and as of Monday is at 37.9 per cent.

3,933 lab tests were taken yesterday. That brings the total number of COVID-19 tests completed in the province since February 2020 to 1,288,252.

Six additional deaths were reported on Monday for a total of 1,398 in Manitoba since the pandemic began.

Public health officials noted last week that due to the backlog in testing they are likely under reporting the actual case numbers.
